"The best preserved monastic site in Devon and Cornwall can be found in Torquay and dates from the end of the 12th century. No sooner was Torre Abbey suppressed in the 16th century, it became a stately home, and although large portions of the church were torn down, the south and west cloisters were adapted into the house. The tithe barn, gatehouse, abbot’s tower and undercrofts all came through unscathed."

Soon after, this medieval building began to function as a meeting space and guildhall for the weavers, and was modernised by the Victorians in the 1870s. Exeter is very famous for its historical woollen textile industry, and in the early 18th century, was actually responsible for some 25% of England's overall output."

"01/06/2021: Read a lot about this place so turned up on a Tuesday at 8am and we were the first inside.Really friendly chap guided us through what the process was and showed us to our table.A couple of hiccups with a non functioning toaster and a tripped ice cream machine, both fixed and the chap was super apologetic (it happens!)Cooked breakfast was really tasty, my 7 year old had the waffles and it was all really good!"
