"Pendennis Castle was built under orders of Henry VIII between 1540 and 1542 in preparation for an expected attack by France and the Holy Roman Empire in retaliation for the annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, who happened to be the aunt of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. A smaller blockhouse constructed closer to the waters edge a few years earlier still remains today. The basic design was a circular keep with a gun platform surrounding it."
