Bristol foodie guide: where locals eat and drink
"With nearly 200 years of experience of welcoming holiday makers, its small wonder Weston remains as much of a magnet for visitors, as it always has. Weston boasts a beautiful promenade, stretching for 1 1/4 miles along the sandy beach. Break your walk by visiting Sea Life Centre, Grand Pier and Marine Lake (boating and paddling)."
"Right next to the Cathedral is Bishop’s Palace and Gardens which has been home to the Bishops of Bath and Wells for over 800 years. It is designated a Grade I listed building and open to visitors. Bishop’s Palace is considered one of the best examples of how bishops used buildings to emphasize their political power in the medieval times."
"Whether you are a history buff, or you want to know some interesting facts about the Somerset County, Weston Museum is the perfect place to be. Located in the heart of Weston-super-Mare, the Weston Museum showcases the history of the city as well as its surrounding areas with the help of many exhibits. "The ship that changed the world” - Brunel’s masterpiece of engineering was effectively abandoned at the beginning of the 20th Century, saved from rusting and welcomed back to Bristol in 1970 by the SS Great Britain Trust, 137 years after her first launch. Climb aboard today to experience the great-grandma of modern passenger ships in all her glory, and discover what life was like for a passenger on board. Plenty of activities help keep the kids entertained, with the chance to meet Brunel himself, dress as a Victorian and climb the rigging."
"Rated the number one visitor attraction in Bristol, the SS Great Britain tells an amazing story of Britain’s greatest engineers and one of the most important ships in history. Brought back from Falkland Islands in 1970, the rusted shell of the ship has been restored and turned into 2 museums and a research centre presenting incredible facts and information about Brunel himself and the history of the ship. You can also discover what life on board was like through interactive activities, making it ideal for a visit with the little ones."
"If the Clifton Suspension Bridge is Brunel’s finest piece of work in Bristol, the SS Great Britain can’t be far behind."
"What: Chef James Wilks got his first break as a teenager working at Midsummer House in Cambridge, before travelling the globe and cooking in some serious Michelin-starred restaurants. Fast-forward a few years and James now has his own Michelin-starred gaff in Redland – with a mini art gallery attached. The food here is contemporary and seasonal, with West Country producers making a big contribution and culinary ideas gleaned from the chef’s travels."
"Sadly, Bristol’s fifth and final Michelin star restaurant, Wilks, has closed its doors, but as proven above, there is still plenty to be explored and admired in and around Bristol and it’s gorgeous Michelin star restaurants. Enjoy your meal at some of Bristol’s finest restaurants. However, if you’re looking to eat out on a budget then why not check out our top 40 cheap places to eat in Bristol."
"Within months of Wilks’ opening, Bristol ceased to be a one Michelin star-trick pony. Opened on the sight of Culinaria – formerly owned by chef Stephen Markwick – Wilks has great culinary credentials. The a la carte menu is composed of local, seasonal ingredients, cooked to the highest standards."
"05/06/2021: Picked this restaurant based on tripadvisor reviews and wasn't disappointed. It is a lovely restaurant and stands out in a rather depressing place that more generally includes low rate fish and chips, rough looking pubs and other 'cheap eats'....From the moment we arrived there was a warm welcome and the staff were fantastic throughout. Despite it being packed (not easy for social distancing!) we were well taken care of, food came quickly and was very tasty."
