The History of Buckfastleigh & its Notable Attractions
"If you’re familiar with Buckfastleigh and the surrounding area, one of the first things that probably springs to mind in Buckfast Abbey and of course, the famous Buckfast Tonic Wine.Buckfast Abbey was founded in 1018 during the reign of King Canute and in 1147 it was rebuilt in stone and became a Cistercian abbey. Between 1536 and 1541 the dissolution of the monasteries took place in England under the order of King Henry VIII and sadly during 1539, it was Buckfast Abbey’s turn. The abbey then stood in ruins for over 200 years and was used as a quarry and even the site of a Gothic mansion."
